The 20th edition of the Nigeria Polytechnic Games (NIPOGA), kicked off on Saturday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, with over 50 institutions billed to participate in the biannual tournament.
The event, which will hold from February 5 to February 16, will witness no fewer than 3,040 athletes from across the country compete for honours in 14 sporting events.
According to the Kwara State Deputy Governor, Mr Kayode Alabi, who declared the games open at the State Polytechnic Sports Complex, the competition would play a significant role in boosting the Federal Government’s efforts in nation-building and further foster unity.
Alabi urged the participating institutions to abide by the rules of the games, while enjoining the officials to display high level of discipline as he assured them of peaceful stay in the state.
In his remarks, the Rector of the Kwara State Polytechnic (Kwara Poly), Dr Abdul Mohammad, craved the indulgence of the athletes to demonstrate the spirit of sportsmanship, particularly in difficult situations.
He added that Kwara Poly (the host institution) has excelled in the areas of sports and entrepreneurship, hence stands out as an institution to beat in the comity of institutions.
