The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has criticized the Northern Governors’ Forum and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar for failing to throw their weight behind the establishment of a regional security outfit, codenamed “Operation Shege Ka Fasa”.

It would be recalled that the CNG had noted during the unveiling of the security network in Kaduna on Wednesday, that Operation Shege Ka Fasa would complement the efforts of the police and military in dealing with the security challenges in all the northern states.

Reacting, Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State, who doubles as the Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, stressed that northern governors were not part of the security outfit.

Lalong disclosed that he and his colleagues had no prior knowledge about Operation Shege Ka Fasa, neither were they consulted before its unveiling.

The Sultan of Sokoto and the Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje had during a Northern Security Meeting in Kaduna on Thursday also dismissed the security outfit.

The CNG, has however, vowed to carry-on with the security initiative despite the rejection from northern leaders.

Speaking to newsmen on Sunday, the spokesman of the group, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman said: “Having exposed the hypocrisy of the northern elite, we now plan to seek legal recognition from relevant federal authorities.

“We are consulting with our legal team to find a way forward. What is absolutely certain is that neither the Sultan or any of his collaborators can stop the people’s resolve to secure their lives and their communities by assisting the national security efforts.”

Suleiman added, “There is all along this feeling that the bankruptcy of the northern elite is responsible for the region’s retrogression and is to a large extent dragging the entire nation backwards.

“This explains why we had to go public before consulting them. If we had consulted them before the public presentation, they would have swept the matter under the carpet. Now we have exposed the elite inconsistencies.

“What the Sultan said merely confirmed the concern about the failure of the northern elite and the traditional institution he heads.”
