The Presidency has reacted to the embarrassing reception meted out to President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday by residents of Maiduguri in Borno State.
Recall that Buhari visited the state yesterday to sympathize with the state government over Sunday’s attack in Auno village, which claimed the lives of 30 travelers and left dozens of properties in ruins.
The president, was however, scorned by hundreds of aggrieved residents who thronged the streets chanting “Bama so” at his motorcade, which means “we don’t want you”.
Reacting, Presidential spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu, accused opposition politicians of allegedly hiring miscreants to boo the president.
In an interview with the Hausa Service of the BBC on Thursday, Shehu said, “I was part of the delegation that entered Maiduguri right from the airport to the Palace of the Shehu of Borno.
“The people came out to say thank you and welcome us. But there was a group which came out shouting ‘we don’t want’.
“Maybe some politicians gathered some miscreants and paid them money to boo Buhari.”
He added that the footage of the embarrassing incident, which has long circulated on the internet was a disservice to the people of Borno State, who he said had a reputation for welcoming guests.
