No fewer than 70 soldiers have been gruesomely killed by Boko Haram insurgents in Gorgi community in Borno State.
It was gathered that the slain military personnel, who were attached to ‘Operation Ayiso Tamonuma’ had luckily escaped an ambush in Alagarno village on Saturday, but were unfortunately overpowered by the insurgents, who “wiped out the entire artillery troop” on Monday in Gorgi.
Narrating the incident to newsmen on condition of anonymity, a military source disclosed that the terrorists fired grenades at the vehicles carrying the troops, which led to heavy casualties.
He said, “The Boko Haram insurgents attacked the rear convoy where the multi barrel rocket launcher (MBRL) and sinotruk (yellow bucket) loaded with soldiers were positioned.
“Boko Haram utilised their rocket propelled grenade (RPG) fire and other support weapons on the vehicles and inflicted heavy casualties on the troops, wiping out the entire artillery troop.”
Another source stated that, “It was a huge loss, at least 70 soldiers have perished in the ambush.
“The terrorists specifically targeted a truck loaded with soldiers with RPGs and incinerated the vehicle, killing all on board.
“So far 70 bodies have been recovered but the toll is certainly more than that as rescue operation is still underway.”
