Benue records first COVID-19 case as infections climb to 89

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed eight new cases of Coronavirus in the country, bringing the total number of infections to 89.

The agency, in a series of tweets on Saturday disclosed that seven of the cases were recorded in Lagos State and one in Benue.

“Eight new cases of #COVID19 have been reported in Nigeria, seven in Lagos State and one in Benue.

“As of 04:00 pm on 28th of March, there are 89 confirmed cases of #COVID19 reported in Nigeria with one dead.

“For a breakdown of cases by states in real time, Lagos currently has 59 cases, FCT – three, Ekiti – one, Oyo – three, Edo – two, Bauchi – two, Osun – one, Rivers – one, Enugu – two, and Benue – one”, the NCDC tweeted.

According to the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, who briefed newsmen in Makurdi, the state capital, shortly after the announcement by the NCDC, the name of the state’s index case was Susan Okpe.

The governor stated that Okpe had recently returned from the United Kingdom, while noting that the state action committee had already commenced contact tracing of about eight persons.
