Early morning explosion destroys over hundred buildings in Akure

No fewer than 100 residential houses, including a church building and a school have been reportedly destroyed by an explosion which occurred at about 1am on Saturday in Ilu Abo town, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The explosion, which was suspected to be a bomb blast also severed the busy Akure/Owo expressway, leaving residents in shock.

The incident was reported to have occurred when a truck conveying explosives to another state exploded at the airport junction area of Akure.

Although, no death was recorded as of press time, many are however feared injured.

Reacting to the incident, the State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu tweeted: “I’ve been briefed by security agencies in the state concerning the loud blast that was heard in Akure.

“I will be at the scene to assess on the advice of heads of our security agencies. I ask that all citizens remain calm as we ascertain details of the incidence.”
