The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has promised to pay a monthly allowance to Alhaja Sikirat Yekini, mother of late Super Eagles striker, Rashidi Yekini.

Mr Olaitan Shittu, the representative of the Sports Minister, Sunday Dare who visited the late footballer’s aged mother in Ijagbo, near Offa, Kwara State on Wednesday, also donated the sum of N50,000 as well as food items to the octogenarian.

Reacting, Alhaja Yekini appreciated the minister for the kind gesture, while lamenting that she has had a torrid time since the passing of her son.

She said: “I have been abandoned for a long time and have not seen any help from anyone.

“I was hospitalised for few days, some months ago and I did cater for myself despite scarce resources, even last month, I received treatment from the hospital.

“I need help from Nigerians, but this Minister has done very well, especially remembering me in this holy month of Ramadan.

“Since my son died, it has been very tough for me because I do not have any help from people. Rashidi’s siblings are not doing well too, so, I was left to struggle for life everyday.”

Rashidi Yekini, a one-time African Footballer of the Year in 1993, died in 2012 shortly after retiring from football.

Having enjoyed a lengthy spell in Europe with Portuguese side, Vitória de Setúbal, Yekini scored Nigeria’s first-ever World Cup goal at the USA 94 tournament.

He rounded off his international career with 37 goals from 58 games; featuring in five major tournaments, including two World Cups.
