President Muhammadu Buhari has signed an Executive Order into law, granting financial autonomy to the legislature and judiciary across the 36 states of the federation.

The president, who disclosed this in a tweet on Friday assured that his government will continue to strengthen the principles and practice of democratic governance in Nigeria.

The tweet read: “Based on the power vested in me under Section 5 of the 1999 Constitution (as Amended), I, today, signed into law Executive Order No. 10 of 2020 for the implementation of Financial Autonomy of State Legislature and State Judiciary.

“This administration will continue to do everything to strengthen the principles and practice of democracy and democratic governance in Nigeria.”

It would be recalled that the conference of State Assembly Speakers had in November 2019 urged the president to sign the Executive Order.

The new policy is expected to strengthen the State Legislature and State Judiciary and make them more independent and accountable in line with the tenets of democracy.
