Buhari describes rape, murder of UNIBEN student as barbaric – IGP takes up case

President Muhammadu Buhari has condoled with the family of the late 100-level student of the University of Benin, Uwaila Omozuwa, who was raped and murdered by hoodlums on Wednesday, May 27.

The tragic incident was said to have occurred when the deceased went to read at the RCCG, Miracle Sanctuary Mega Parish, Edo Province 10, in Benin City.

Describing the act as barbaric, Buhari who reacted in a tweet earlier today, ordered the Nigeria Police Force to speedily investigate Omozuwa’s death while ensuring that all the culprits face the full wrath of the law.

He wrote: “I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Uwaila Omozuwa. I expect the Nigeria Police Force to speedily and diligently investigate this case and ensure that all the culprits responsible for this barbaric act are brought to justice.”

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu has ordered the immediate transfer of the case from the Edo State Police Command to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

A statement issued by Force spokesperson, Frank Mba, read: “The Inspector General of Police, IGP M.A Adamu, NPM, mni has ordered the immediate transfer of the ongoing investigations into the inhuman sexual assault and death of Miss Vera Uwaila Omosuwa which occurred recently in Benin, Edo State from the Police State Headquarters, Benin to the Force headquarters, Abuja.

“The IGP’s directive is sequel to the preliminary report from the team of investigators and forensic experts earlier deployed to assist the Edo State Police Command in the investigations into the unfortunate incident. The DIG in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), DIG Anthony Ogbizi Michael, fdc will henceforth provide direct supervision and ensure speedy and thorough investigation of the case.”
