Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq on Thursday identified with the #EndSARS protesters in Ilorin. The governor, who joined the protest match to the police headquarters, however called for calm, while assuring that the grievances would be addressed.
Abdulrazaq, who acknowledged that the grievances of the protesters were genuine, disclosed that he had held a virtual meeting with some other governors and businessmen who had engaged with individuals involved in the protest, after which a five-point demand was forwarded to President Muhammadu Buhari.
The governor, who was joined by his deputy, Mr. Kayode Alabi, briefly addressed the protesters who converged on the Government House, Ilorin, after which he led them to the police headquarters at their request.
Noting that young people across the country have made their voices heard, Abdulrazaq assured that the interest of the youths would be protected.
“The Commissioner of police has listened to your complaints here. I have also listened. I thank you for your calmness,” the governor said, while also announcing the setting up of an Ombudsman’s through which those with complaints can register their grievances.
Governor Abdulrazaq also defended the integrity of the police, saying not all of them are bad, and that many of them went through a lot o guarantee the safety and well-being of the populace.
Responding, the Kwara State Commissioner of police, Kayode Egbetokun commended the protesters for being orderly, while assuring that officers alleged of misconducts would be investigated. He also encourage the protesters to always approach him with complaints they may have against any of his officers.
