Come Sunday, 22nd May, 2022, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, like every other chapter of the party across the country, would conduct primary elections to elect flag bearers for the State Assembly elections. The outcome of the exercise in the State of Harmony would be particularly revealing of what is to come in the main election slated for early next year. Why?

A majority of APC candidates in the 2019 elections were not exactly popular choices. Many rode on the Otoge campaign to win the election. But in 2023, Kwara APC can scarcely afford to field any candidate without a political base or grassroot appeal. This is why it is important that the party look in the way of popular and acceptable candidates like Hajia Maryam Yusuf Aladi who is contesting to represent Ilorin South Constituency in the Kwara State House of Assembly.

Hajia Maryam Yusuf Aladi, a business woman and philanthropist, is someone who has over time converted personal generosity to political capital, the likes that is only rivalled by only a few politicians in Kwara of today. Just recently, hundreds of PDP members converged in Centre Igboro Primary School in Ilorin to announce their decision to join the PDP. One of the decampees said they took the decision because of the love they have for Hajia Maryam Yusuf Aladi, and that they joined the APC because of her.

Using the platform of the Grassroot Development Movement, of which she is the National Coordinator, Hajia Maryam has impacted on communities around her and touched lives in no small way. Her grassroot network is extensive and expansive, and this is one advantage that APC can easily tap into.

As someone who has given freely and cheerfully in periods when there was no election, the people sees the 2023 election and the contest for the Ilorin South House of Assembly seat as a natural way to reward this hardworking business woman and philanthropist. And this is why it makes a lot of sense for the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kwara to field popular and acceptable candidates, not just in Ilorin South but across board.
