…Victim’s father petitions Kwara Gov, Police Commissioner, Others
More than a year since the alleged molestation of an eight year old pupil of His Grace Schools, Oyun, Kwara State by her Yoruba teacher, Hameed Akorede, allegations of possible ritual dimension to the alleged sexual assault are beginning to unravel.
A man who lives around the school area (names withheld) has hinted Journalists of the possibility of a likely ritual practice going on in the school, narrating how members of the public have accused the proprietors of the school severally of rituals, and that Hameed, the alleged sexual molester, was a mere accomplice.
Given specific details of the event that transpired in the school on the day in question, the informant alleges, “On that very day, I was in this very house. We did observe that some noises here and there, the teachers would come out and go in, before the father (referring to the victim father) came and I saw him going in and going out. After some time, we heard what actually happened, what his grievances was.
“The very vital information that I would like to give to you is, there is a particular woman who came to drop her child and she was making a call, the woman belonged to one of the security agencies. She was calling somebody whom I don’t know, but it’s either the proprietor of the school or somebody close to them, telling the person that she should know that her child has reported this kind of incident before but that they wouldn’t want to embarrass the proprietor of the school, that was why they did some kind of cover up or refuse to speak out. That I heard very well…”.
Asked to comment specifically about the general suspicions of ritual practice in the school, the informant said, “You know the kind of society we live in now. Like I said earlier, you see inordinate ambition to acquire wealth, fame and all that is driving people to do unorthodox things. You can’t rule the issue (ritual) out, it’s very true…. I’ve heard that in one of the arms of this particular school they did same, that people have caught them doing it.”
While the informant appears to be given a revelation, he was only confirming what the father of the victim, Fadumade Vincent had always suspected.
In a petition dated 20th July, 2020 addressed to the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, Fadumade alleged that his daughter was almost used for rituals by the proprietor and the proprietress of His Grace Schools.
In the five page petition, which was copied to the Kwara State Governor, the First Lady, Chief Judge of Kwara State, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Commissioner for Education as well as the Kwara State office of the National Human Rights Commission; Fadunmade narrated his efforts at unraveling the truth surrounding the alleged sexual molestation and harassment of his daughter. He also detailed a meeting called by a Director in the State Ministry of Education, Alhaji Alhassan Nda-Offa which had the proprietor of the school, Apostle Joshua Adekanye in attendance.
Fadunmade, who also narrated how he was arrested and illegally detained by men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, at the behest of the proprietor of His Grace Schools, claimed that while at the Ministry of Education meeting, Apostle Adekanye asked his daughter a question that raised his suspicion that ritual intentions might have been behind the ordeals of his daughter.
“Information gotten so far reveals that this may be connected to rituals which may have been going on in the school for a while. This can be corroborated with the question asked by the Proprietor (Apostle Joshua Adekanye) from my daughter: ‘Did he touch you with something? And the desperation the owners have displayed so far to cover the incident,” Fadunmade alleges.
It would be recalled that on the 27th February, 2020, a Yoruba teacher named Hammed Akorede who works with His Grace should was alleged to have molested the then 7 year old pupil in the school toilet. The teacher, who was initially declared a fugitive for about 24 hours after the matter became public, later resurfaced and was remanded at the Oke Kura Custodial Centre of the Nigeria Correctional Service after his arraignment at the Magistrate Court in Ganmo.
While the culprit had pleaded for the case to be terminated, his employers on the other hand, according to Fadunmade, have tried to frustrate the case at different times. They have also severally subject Fadunmade to harassment, including a direct criminal complaint levelled against him at the Upper Area Court that he was threatening to kill them.
Efforts to get the reaction of Apostle Joshua Adekanye, Proprietor of His Grace Schools, to the new twist in the alleged child molestation proved abortive as at press time. He did not respond to the several calls put across to him.
