Today marks a solemn anniversary – one year since the untimely passing of Ilerioluwa Aloba popularly known as Mohbad, a talented young Nigerian hip-hop artist whose life was cut short in controversial circumstances. The aftermath of his death sparked a maelstrom of allegations, counter-allegations, and unanswered questions that continue to haunt his fans, family, and the music industry.
In the immediate aftermath, fingers were pointed at Mohbad’s music boss, Naira Marley, and his associate, Sam Larry, with some accusing them of playing a role in his death. Others called for Mohbad’s father, wife, and mother to be held accountable, while a few even suggested a DNA test to verify the paternity of his son.
One year on, it is disheartening to note that the truth behind Mohbad’s tragic demise remains shrouded in mystery. Despite the cacophony of claims and counterclaims, no concrete evidence has emerged to pinpoint responsibility. The lack of closure has only added to the anguish of those who loved him and admired his artistry.
The music industry, too, has been tarnished by this unsavoury episode. The allegations of exploitation and mistreatment of artists have raised concerns about the welfare of creatives in Nigeria’s music scene. Mohbad’s death has highlighted the need for greater accountability, transparency, and protection of artists’ rights.
As Nigerians and the rest of the world remember Mohbad’s life and legacy, we must also acknowledge the systemic failures that have hindered a thorough investigation into his death. It is imperative that the authorities revisit the case, leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of truth and justice.
Mohbad’s memory deserves nothing less. His music, though silenced, continues to inspire and influence a new generation of artists. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that his tragic demise serves as a catalyst for change, rather than a mere footnote in the annals of Nigerian music history.
Rest in peace, Mohbad. Your music lives on, but the quest for truth and justice must continue.
