MTN Offices Shut Down Nationwide Amidst SIM Registration Controversy
By Nafiu Toyin Abdulqadri
In a sudden move, MTN Nigeria has announced the closure of all its offices nationwide today, amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the blocking of SIM cards due to incomplete registration.
The decision comes after thousands of customers stormed MTN offices on Monday, protesting the blocking of their lines. The telecom giant had blocked the SIMs of subscribers who failed to complete their registrations, in compliance with the federal government’s directive.
However, the National Communications Commission (NCC) swiftly intervened, ordering telecoms to unblock the affected lines, citing concerns of potential mass protests.
As of the time of filing this report, MTN has reopened the lines of affected customers. The company’s offices remain closed, reportedly due to fears of potential revolts from disgruntled customers.
This development highlights the growing tensions between telecom operators, regulatory bodies, and customers in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
