Nigerian Military Bans Romantic Relationships, Updates Code of Conduct

By Balogun Tumininu.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced new guidelines for military personnel, explicitly prohibiting romantic relationships between officers and their subordinates or the spouses of their subordinates. This update is part of the Harmonised Armed Forces Terms and Conditions of Service, signed into effect by President Bola Tinubu on December 16, 2024.

The new guidelines outline several behaviors considered inconsistent with the values of the armed forces, including:

– Homosexuality, lesbianism, and bestiality
– Cross-dressing and membership in LGBTQIA2S+ groups
– Body piercing and tattooing
– Disorderly conduct, brawling, and public disgrace
– Intoxication, whether on or off duty

Military personnel are also required to:

– Settle financial obligations promptly, including vehicle licenses and insurance
– Refrain from joining secret societies or political parties

These updates aim to maintain discipline, order, and the chain of command within the Nigerian military. By outlining clear expectations for behavior and conduct, the government seeks to ensure that military personnel uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
