The World Trade Organization (WTO) has reappointed Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as its Director-General for a second term. The reappointment, which was announced on Friday, will be effective from September 1, 2025.
Okonjo-Iweala, the first African and first woman to hold the position, has been leading the WTO since 2021. Her reappointment has been welcomed by various stakeholders, including the United States government. Ambassador Katherine Tai, in a statement, congratulated Okonjo-Iweala on her reappointment, appreciating her strong commitment to the work and future of the organization.
The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has also welcomed the reappointment, with its Secretary General, John W.H. Denton, praising Okonjo-Iweala’s leadership in championing multilateral cooperation during a challenging period for world trade.
