In a strongly worded statement, former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki has expressed deep concern over the ongoing dispute between the current Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central. Dr. Saraki emphasized the need to protect the integrity and sanctity of the Senate, urging both parties to prioritize the institution over individual interests.

The dispute, which has sparked widespread public debate, has raised questions about the Senate’s image and adherence to due process. Dr. Saraki lamented the negative impact of the controversy on the public perception of the National Assembly, stressing that the Senate, as a key arm of government, must uphold its values and maintain public trust.

Dr. Saraki called for a transparent and unbiased investigation by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions. He urged both Senator Akpabio and Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to fully cooperate with the committee and present their cases openly. Drawing from his own experience during the 8th Senate, Dr. Saraki recounted how he voluntarily appeared before the Ethics Committee to address false allegations, a move he described as humbling but necessary to preserve the Senate’s integrity.

He emphasized that the investigation should be conducted in a manner that ensures accountability and fairness, without favoring any party. Dr. Saraki also warned against allowing the Senate to be perceived as an institution that tolerates misconduct, such as sexual harassment, gender bias, or abuse of office. He stressed the importance of following due process to address any wrongdoing and restore public confidence in the Senate.

While Dr. Saraki clarified that he was not taking sides or making any judgments about the guilt or innocence of the parties involved, he reiterated the need for a thorough investigation to uncover the truth. He called on all stakeholders, including leaders, members, and supporters, to prioritize the sanctity of the Senate and work towards strengthening democratic institutions.
