The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken legal action against the Senate President, Mr. Akpabio, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Abbas, over the National Assembly’s failure to end the unlawful practice of fixing allowances and account for the N21 million monthly running costs paid to members.
In a lawsuit filed at the Federal High Court, SERAP accused the National Assembly of violating the country’s constitution and international standards by failing to transparently account for the allowances and running costs.
The lawsuit seeks a declaration that the failure to account for the allowances and running costs is unlawful and unconstitutional. SERAP is also seeking an order compelling the National Assembly to end the unlawful practice and account for the funds.
