In a surprise move, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu might have approved a three-year extension of the tenure of Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, despite his impending retirement age of 60, which he will reach tomorrow, September 4, 2024.
Sources at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation confirmed that Egbetokun received a letter confirming his tenure extension from Secretary George Akume on Monday.
The move comes on the heels of the Senate’s passage of a bill amending the Police Act 2020, which introduces a new clause allowing police officers to serve for 40 years or until they reach the age of 65, whichever comes first.
The tenure extension has sparked controversy, with some questioning the timing and legality of the move. However, officials argue that the amendment to the Police Act provides a legal basis for the extension.
The development has sparked a heated debate on social media, with many Nigerians expressing mixed reactions to the news. Critics argue that it undermines the traditional retirement age and may set a precedent for future extensions.
