Unilorin Hosts 23 Universities, 250 Delegates For Debate, Quiz Challenge

The week long activities marking this year’s edition of the All Nigeria Universities Debating Championship, which is the 9th of such, and the second edition of the All Nigeria Quiz Challenge is closing today, Saturday.

The event, which commenced on Sunday, 13th February, 2022, has 23 registered institutions across Nigeria as participants.

The schedule of activities for the two programmes include a British parliamentary style debate, quiz contests, public speaking as well as awards and Gala.

The convener of the tournaments, Mr. Lawal Ahmed Abiodun, popularly called Amba, told this medium that each of the 23 institutions that participated brought at least 11 delegates for the tournaments.

Lawal, who doubles as the Secretary of the local organizing committee, further disclosed that a major aim of the event was to promote the culture of critical thinking and spirit of sportsmanship amongst Nigerian youths in the universities. He stressed that the competition was like Olympic Games where students can be proud of taking part and not necessarily for winning.

The two major tournaments were coordinated by duo of Dr. I. O. Iyiola and Dr. M. K. Garba as directors for both the quiz and debate tournaments respectively.

While expressing appreciation to members of the local organizing committee, especially the Chairman, Dr A A. Owoade, for their hard work and sleepless nights towards having a successful event; the convener, Ahmed Abiodun, said the quiz aspect of the competition has since been concluded on Wednesday, 16 February 2022 with Ladoke Akintola University of Technology as winner while Bowen University and University of Lagos came second and third respectively. The host institution, the University of Ilorin came fourth.

The finals of the debate and public speaking category was held yesterday, Friday, 18th February, 2022. The general public is cordially invited to the closing ceremony, gala night and award ceremony today, Saturday at the University of Ilorin Multipurpose Hall.
