The Rivers State Police Command has reacted to the bizarre killing of young women in quick succession in Port Harcourt.
The slain victims who were reported to be sex workers were mostly found gagged with a white handkerchief and strangled.
Although, the state police command has so far confirmed five deaths, photos of more victims murdered in a similar fashion circulating on the internet had risen the number to ten.
In his reaction, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration, Chuks Enwonwu urged young women in the state to desist from prostitution.
Enwonwu gave the charge while addressing a group of protesting women who stormed the police headquarters in Port Harcourt.
He said, “In as much as societal values degenerate, you need to go back to educate your fellow women and advise them against prostitution because they are the targets and victims of such crimes.”
He, however noted that some arrests have been made and investigation was ongoing.
The top police official assured the protesters that the police and management of hotels in the state were interfacing in a bid to curb the ugly situation through proper documentation of guests and installation of surveillance cameras at the hotels.
