Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has launched a comprehensive inquiry into consumer complaints against key players in the banking, telecommunications, and aviation sectors. The inquiry, set to begin on December 3, 2024, will focus on addressing allegations of poor service delivery, exploitative practices, and potential violations of consumer rights.
The entities under investigation include Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), MTN Nigeria, and Air Peace Limited. The FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, outlined the scope of the investigations, citing widespread complaints against these companies.
The FCCPC will examine complaints about GTBank network failures that prevent customers from accessing funds or using banking applications. The commission will also investigate persistent issues with MTN undelivered data services, unexplained data depletion, and subpar customer support. The inquiry will equally address allegations of exploitative ticket pricing, including significant fare increases for advance bookings on domestic routes of Air Peace.
The FCCPC emphasized that its engagement with these companies will provide an opportunity to address consumer concerns, clarify business practices, and enforce compliance with regulatory standards. Consumers are urged to continue reporting instances of poor service delivery or exploitative practices through the FCCPC’s official channels.
