Tragedy struck in the early hours of Thursday, August 29, as Waheed Ayilara, the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, passed away at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.
According to sources close to the family, Ayilara underwent prostate cancer surgery on Wednesday, August 28, but unfortunately succumbed to complications hours later.
The family confirmed his demise, expressing deep sadness at the loss of their loved one. Ayilara, a seasoned police officer, had previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department before taking over as Akwa Ibom State Commissioner in February 2024, following his deployment by Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
His sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the police community and his home town with tributes pouring in for the respected law enforcement officer.
