Civil Servants to Wear Aso-Oke Every Thursday in Oyo

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has introduced a new dress code policy that’s set to promote Yoruba culture and boost the local economy. As of January 27, 2025, all civil and public servants will be required to wear native attire with a touch of traditional Aso oke fabrics every Thursday, in addition to the existing Friday native attire tradition.

The goal is to preserve Yoruba culture, empower local artisans, and give the informal economy a much-needed boost. By incorporating Aso oke fabrics, the government aims to support local weavers, dyers, and tailors, ultimately “sustaining livelihoods, reducing unemployment, and increasing income streams for artisans.”

The policy is expected to have a ripple effect, spurring growth in the informal sector, bolstering tourism, and fostering inclusive development. As Governor Makinde’s administration puts it, “This policy is not just about dressing; it’s a strategic effort to validate our cultural identity while uplifting grassroots economies.” By embracing this new dress code, the workforce will become “ambassadors of tradition and catalysts for economic transformation”.
