…our goal is not to stop the elections – PDP

A Federal High Court in Abuja has vacated an ex-parte order that restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing the National Voter Register to the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC) for the upcoming local government elections. Justice Peter Lifu lifted the order, citing its expiration after lasting more than 14 days.
The court also dismissed the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) request to commit KWSIEC Chairman Okanlawon Baba to prison for allegedly violating a valid court order. The judge ruled that the contempt charge was not served on Baba as required by law, violating his right to fair hearing.
In response to the court’s decision, the Kwara State PDP declared its commitment to contesting and winning the local government elections scheduled for September 21, 2024. The party’s spokesman, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, stated that they respect the court’s ruling and will proceed with the elections in accordance with the law.
However, the PDP expressed concerns about potential election manipulation and rumors of pre-thumb printed ballot papers. They urged security agencies to increase vigilance around KWSIEC to ensure the integrity of the electoral system.
The party emphasized its goal is not to stop the elections but to ensure they are conducted freely, fairly, and transparently. With the court ruling, the PDP is confident in their chances, saying the people of Kwara are solidly behind them.
