Professor Ali Ahmad, a renowned constitutional law expert and former Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, has praised the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment on local government autonomy. He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, for their role in upholding the constitution and rekindling hope for a more functional and effective Nigeria.
Professor Ahmad, in a statement released on Friday, expressed hopes that this judgement will inspire more qualified individuals to participate in politics and bring governance closer to the people.
The professor notes that this decision is a significant milestone, especially for Kwara state, which has suffered from impunity and plundering under its current governor. He urges support for the civil society group, ENETSUD, in their legal battle against the Kwara State Government to ensure the Court of Appeal’s order is affirmed by the Supreme Court, allowing for elected LG officials to be produced in the state for the first time in five years.
Meanwhile, the Prof urged President Tinubu to take a crucial step towards reforming the local government system by sending an emergency executive bill to the National Assembly. According to him, this bill would enable INEC to conduct local government elections, completing the financial autonomy granted by the Supreme Court.
While acknowledging potential resistance from state governors, Professor Ali encouraged the president to push forward, as history will remember his efforts kindly. He emphasized the importance of swift action, suggesting the bill should be treated in isolation and passed within a few weeks, with the support of Nigerians who are eager to see meaningful change.
