Nigeria’s Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has urged journalists to take a strong stance against fake news, citing it as a significant threat to democracy and public trust in the media. Olawande made this call during a courtesy visit from the Female Journalists Network in Abuja.

He emphasized the crucial role professional bodies play in curbing fake news, warning that if left unchecked, it could undermine Nigeria’s democratic progress. Olawande also stressed the need for sustained efforts to educate media practitioners about the negative consequences of fake news and the importance of upholding ethical standards.

The Female Journalists Network, represented by Daniel Black, expressed their commitment to promoting social development initiatives. They highlighted their upcoming participation in the 63rd Commission for Social Development, where they aim to amplify Nigerian civil society organizations’ voices and contribute to global discussions on key social indicators like poverty eradication and women’s inclusion.

Black also called on government ministries to support their initiatives, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between civil society organizations and the government in addressing social challenges.
