In a gathering that combined reflection and intellectual discourse, former Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Dr. Ishaq Modibbo-Kawu, hosted members of the Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) to an Iftar dinner at his residence in GRA, Ilorin. The event, held on Monday the 3rd day of Ramadan, provided a platform for a robust discussion on journalism ethics, media integrity, and the challenges of operating in the digital space.

During the Iftar, Dr. Modibo-Kawu, a veteran journalist, former General Manager of Kwara TV and former Editor at Daily Trust Newspaper, criticized the growing trend of media houses awarding politicians, describing it as a practice that undermines the credibility of journalism.

He recounted his time at Daily Trust, stating that he never supported such initiatives because they compromise the integrity of media organizations. Instead, he advocated for recognizing professionals making significant contributions in their fields. He cited the example of a doctor in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, who dedicated his life to helping survivors of sexual violence, as a worthy recipient of such recognition.

Dr. Modibo-Kawu also emphasized the importance of unity among journalists, lamenting that the profession is often weakened by a culture of competition rather than collaboration. He urged media practitioners to foster teamwork and mutual respect to strengthen the industry and ensure its growth. “We must see ourselves as partners in progress, not rivals,” he said.

On the contentious issue of social media regulation, Dr. Modibo-Kawu firmly opposed any legislative attempts to regulate digital platforms, arguing that such moves are unconstitutional and threaten freedom of expression. He stressed the need to protect this fundamental right while encouraging ethical practices in online journalism.

Furthermore, he highlighted the critical need for continuous training and capacity building for journalists, particularly those navigating the digital landscape. According to him, professional development is essential for maintaining credibility and adapting to the rapidly evolving media environment.

In his closing remarks, the Chairman of ASKOMP, Mr. Salihu Shola Taofeeq, who is also the Founder and Publisher of Informant247, expressed gratitude to Dr. Kawu for his services to the State and Nigeria and for his dedication to the journalism profession. He praised the veteran journalist for his insightful contributions and prayed for his continued strength and impact in the industry.
