Professor Fatai Aremu, a renowned academic and Executive Director of Research Enterprise Systems, has made a compelling case for the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Nigeria’s healthcare delivery system.
Speaking at the Science Policy Engagement for Africa (SPEAR) event, Aremu emphasized the potential of AI to transform healthcare outcomes, improve efficiency, and increase accessibility of medical services.
Aremu highlighted the growing interest and investment in AI-driven solutions across sectors in Nigeria, despite challenges such as a shortage of medical personnel, inadequate infrastructure, and slow diagnosis processes. He acknowledged the government’s commitment to fostering AI innovation and development, citing institutions like the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) and National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
To fully harness the potential of AI in healthcare, Aremu stressed the need for government policies and investments to support AI adoption in hospitals, clinics, and medical research institutions. He also urged stakeholders to collaborate on developing indigenous AI-powered solutions tailored to Nigeria’s health challenges.
Aremu’s call for AI integration in healthcare aligns with global trends, where countries are leveraging technology to improve healthcare outcomes, reduce costs, and enhance patient experiences. With effective implementation, AI could play a transformative role in strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system and making quality medical services more accessible to the population.
