The devastating floods in Jigawa State have taken a devastating toll on the community, with the death count rising to 28 and thousands more displaced. The disaster has severely impacted 13 local government areas, with four areas – Auyo, Buji, Jahun, and Miga – being the hardest hit.
According to Dr. Haruna Mairiga, Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the floods have displaced over 6,000 families, with many victims housed in primary schools or staying with relatives. Over 5,000 people have been registered in the 20 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps established by the state government, excluding nursing babies.
The floods have disrupted official activities, rendering local government secretariats inaccessible. However, despite the challenges, the government has provided essential supplies, including drinking water, toilets, and mosquito nets, to the IDP camps to ensure the well-being of those affected.
The situation remains dire, but the government’s efforts aim to bring comfort and support to those in need. The state government continues to work tirelessly to provide aid and relief to the affected communities, with the hope of alleviating the suffering caused by the devastating floods.
