The Lagos Police Command has successfully facilitated the return of N1 million extorted from three National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members by four rogue police officers in the Surulere area of the state. The incident came to light after Oluyemi Fasipe, an X user, exposed the officers’ alleged extortion on social media.
According to reports, the officers demanded N1 million from the corps members after they failed to produce a physical copy of their driver’s license. One of the corps members was also forced to transfer Bitcoin worth $842 to the officers. Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident and stated that the officers involved were undergoing interrogation.
In an update on October 4, Fasipe tweeted that the extorted money had been refunded and expressed appreciation for Hundeyin’s and the Lagos State NYSC’s efforts. The officers could face dismissal depending on the outcome of the internal trial, aimed at addressing police misconduct and ensuring justice for the affected corps members.
This incident highlights the Lagos Police Command’s commitment to eradicating corruption and upholding the integrity of its personnel. The force’s swift response and investigation have sparked conversations around police accountability in Nigeria, with many urging stringent reforms to prevent future occurrences of misconduct.
As the investigation continues, Nigerians eagerly await the outcome, hoping that justice will be served.
