The national minimum wage announcement, long awaited by many, is finally expected today, Thursday, July 18th, 2024. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will meet with organized labour representatives at the presidential villa to finalize negotiations.
A key point of contention remains the proposed minimum wage amount, with the federal government suggesting N62,000 and labour advocating for N250,000.
Today’s meeting builds upon last week’s discussions, where both parties exchanged views.
According to NLC Chairman Ajaero, the goal is to finalize the new minimum wage with the president’s input. Notably, President Tinubu previously appealed to labour leaders to consider the country’s available resources and suggested reviewing the minimum wage every two to three years, rather than the current five-year cycle, to avoid future controversies.
