The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has taken drastic measures by suspending four senior officers amid allegations of misconduct and bribery involving social media influencer Bobrisky.
The suspended officers include:
Michael Anugwa – Deputy Controller of Corrections at Kiri-kiri’s Medium Security Custodial Centre
Sikiru Adekunle: Deputy Controller of Corrections at Kiri-kiri’s Maximum-Security Custodial Centre
Ogbule Samuel Obinna: ASC II at Afikpo’s Medium Security Custodial Centre, accused of escorting a convicted inmate outside the facility
Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu: Deputy Controller of Corrections at Kuje-Abuja’s Medium Security Custodial Centre, suspected of receiving money on behalf of an inmate.
These suspensions are part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of bribery and misconduct within the NCoS. Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has vowed to root out corruption, stating, “No indiscipline, unprofessionalism, or corruption will be condoned”.
The investigation was sparked by a viral audio recording where Bobrisky claimed to have paid N15 million to unnamed officers to serve his six-month prison sentence in a private apartment instead of a correctional facility. Bobrisky was convicted in April for abusing naira notes.
The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board has assured the public that the investigation will be transparent and thorough, with consequences for any personnel found guilty of wrongdoing.
