Nigeria has made history by becoming the first African country to receive mpox vaccines, with 10,000 doses arriving on Tuesday. This milestone comes after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the rise of mpox a public health emergency of international concern on August 14, 2024.
The vaccines, donated by the United States government, are set to be distributed in five states with the highest number of mpox cases. Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Muhammad Ali Pate, expressed gratitude for the donation, stating that the vaccines are safe and effective.
The move is a significant step in combating the spread of the new strain of mpox virus, and Nigeria has pledged to continue strengthening surveillance and vigilance to prevent and control the outbreak. This development marks a crucial moment in the fight against mpox in Africa, with Nigeria leading the way.
