The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Ajaero, has been summoned by the police to their headquarters in Abuja for questioning over alleged serious crimes, including treason and terrorism financing.
According to a statement signed by ACP Adamu S. Muazu, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ajaero is required to report to the IRT Complex in Abuja on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at 10:00 am. The police warned that failure to comply would result in a warrant of arrest being issued against him.
This development comes after the NLC raised an alarm about a raid on its headquarters in Abuja on August 8, sparking concerns about the government’s intentions towards the labour union.
The NLC has been vocal about workers’ rights and has been involved in several industrial actions in recent times, leading to speculation that the police summons may be a move to silence the union’s leadership.
Ajaero’s summoning has generated widespread concern among labour activists and civil society groups, who see it as an attempt to intimidate and harass the NLC president.
