The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has been released from custody on administrative bail, a top source at the Department of State Services (DSS) confirmed.
Ajaero was arrested on Monday morning by DSS operatives at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja while en route to the United Kingdom to attend a conference on workers’ rights and social justice.
The NLC had given the Federal Government an ultimatum to release Ajaero unconditionally by Monday midnight, threatening severe consequences if their demand was not met.
The incident has sparked widespread criticism and raised concerns about the government’s commitment to upholding human rights and the rule of law.
Ajaero’s release is seen as a victory for the labour movement, but the NLC is likely to remain vigilant and continue advocating for workers’ rights and social justice.
