NUJ Kwara State Council Elects New Executives Amidst Controversy
The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kwara State Council has elected and inaugurated new executives, with Mr. Abdullateef Olanrewaju Ahmed reelected as chairman for a second term.
The election, held yesterday in Ilorin, saw the following officials elected:
– Hajia Binta Abubakar-Mora as Vice Chairman
– Olayinka Alaya as General Secretary
– Hajia Madinah Olayinka Sanni as Financial Secretary
– Bushrah Badmus Yusuf as Treasurer.
However, a by-election will be conducted for the post of auditor, as the two contestants received an equal number of votes.
But the election has been marred by controversy, with Abdullahi Dare Akogun, the chairmanship candidate, vowing to challenge the declaration of Ahmed Lanre Abdullateef as the winner. Akogun alleged flagrant disregard of court orders, pecuniary inducements, and disenfranchisement of members, among other irregularities.
Speaking to newsmen, Akogun expressed his dissatisfaction with the election process and vowed to take legal action to address the issues. The development has raised concerns about the credibility and fairness of the election, with some members calling for an investigation into the allegations.
