Six Years After, Court Sets to Rule on Offa Bank Robbery Case

The Kwara State High Court has scheduled August 2, 2024, to deliver its judgment in the notorious Offa bank robbery case, which occurred on April 5, 2018. On Monday, the presiding judge received final written arguments from both the prosecution and defense teams, presented by lead counsels Rotimi Jacob (SAN) for the state and Mathew Emeribe for the defense.

The prosecution and defense teams presented their arguments on points of law, and the judge however, indicated that the August 2 judgment date is tentative and subject to change.

Recall that six suspects, including a police officer, Michael Adikwu (now deceased), were arrested in connection with the deadly armed robbery in Offa on April 5, 2018.

Ayoade Akinnibosun and four others are currently on trial, which began on November 11, 2018. The suspects face charges of criminal conspiracy, murder of nine policemen and civilians, and illegal possession of firearms. The robbery attack on five commercial banks in Offa resulted in the deaths of over 30 people, including nine police officers.

While Michael Adikwu died in police custody, the remaining five suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges.
