A Federal High Court sitting in Benin, Edo State, yesterday ( Friday) sentenced to prison an SS II student named Akhigbe Gabriel.
Gabriel, who was charged to court for offences bothering on impersonation and internet fraud, was convicted alongside Adesuwa Precious, Ogheneteru Pezu, Kenneth Owa, and Isaac Nkemdule.
The suspects were alleged to have defrauded one Joy of N150, 000 received through the bank account of one of the suspects. The offence was said to be in contravention of section 15; sub-Section 2 of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act.
Gabriel, a.k.a. Matt Chan, who is facing four counts, allegedly impersonated an American, Matthew Chan and sent male nude pictures to another American Candy Cerfi, contrary to section 22, 14 sub-Section 2 of the Cyber Crimes Act of 2015.
The presiding judge, Justice Garba Umar expressed disappointment in Gabriel whom he said have focused on his studies, being a young man.
Gabriel, who pleaded guilty to the charge, was ordered to be remanded in prison custody with others until the next adjourned date.
