Candidates without NYSC certificate can contest guber elections, Court declares

By David Olalekan.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a pre-election suit filed against the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, by a former senator, Iyabo Anisulowo, who challenged Abiodun’s eligibility to contest in the governorship election, owing to his failure to participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.

The court struck out the case yesterday, stressing that a candidate cannot be disqualified from an election for failure to participate in the National Youth Service Corps scheme.

Recall that the immediate past Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, had in a similar case, challenged his disqualification by the All Progressives Congress, APC, who barred him from contesting in the 2018 APC governorship primaries because he did not participate in the NYSC scheme.

The court, however, dismissed Shittu’s suit against the APC.
