Ex-1st Lady appeals forfeiture of N12.2bn to FG, says money was lawfully gotten

By David Olalekan.

Former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, today, approached the Court of Appeal in Lagos to challenge a High Court ruling which ordered a forfeiture of her N12.2billion to the Federal Government.

Mrs Jonathan, through her counsel, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), prayed the court to set aside the judgment of Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of the Federal High Court in Lagos, adding that Justice Olatoregun erred in law by ordering the final forfeiture when she had no jurisdiction to do so.

Recall that Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of the Federal High Court in Lagos, yesterday, granted an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) seeking a final forfeiture of the 8.4 million dollars and N7.4 billion found in accounts linked to Patience Jonathan.

The Court held that since the former First Lady could not prove that the funds were legitimately acquired, it could be reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime.
