The Super Eagles duo of John Mikel Obi and Odion Jude Ighalo have announced their retirement from the National team.

Mikel made the announcement on his Instagram page, where he wrote: “At the age of 32, it’s time for me to retire from the National team and let the youth take over, who’ve done an amazing job securing a bronze medal at AFCON 2019.

“Thank you to all my Nigerian supporters and to my Country for all the trust, support and love you’ve shown me over the past 15 years.”

Ighalo, 30, who’s on the verge of claiming the Golden Boot award at the 2019 AFCON with five goals from seven matches, reportedly announced his retirement from international football on his WhatsApp status last night, shortly after Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Tunisia in the third place match.

According to BBC World Football reporter, Osasu Obayiuwana, there was an agreement between Ighalo and coach Gernot Rohr not to make the decision public until after Wednesday’s game.
