Nigeria under a dictatorship, Atiku reacts to NBC’s shutdown of AIT

The 2019 presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, has criticized the indefinite suspension of DAAR Communications, the parent company of AIT and Ray Power FM by the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC.

Atiku chided the action of the NBC which he hinted was an indication that Nigeria was now under a dictatorship.

The former Vice President wrote on his Twitter handle: “If, at this time, we stand by as the Press loses its independence, there will be little to differentiate us from a dictatorship. This should not happen. -AA.”

The Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Modibbo Kawu announced the suspension of DAAR Communications Plc while addressing the media in Abuja yesterday.

The NBC DG accused AIT and Ray Power FM of airing a Presidential election documentary, a matter pending before a tribunal.

Kawu also listed “the inability of the company to pay its fees, the use of divisive and inciting contents from the social media”, among other failings of station, as responsible for the ban.
