‘Shelve planned protest’, Tinubu pleads, promises allowance for unemployed graduates

As discourse around a planned nationwide protest continues to rage, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appealed to the organisers to give him more time, assuring that Nigerians would soon see the result of his efforts.

A nationwide protest scheduled for August 1, is being organized to draw attention to the economic challenges facing the country. Despite the organizers remaining anonymous, the protest has garnered significant momentum on social media and is planned to take place simultaneously across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

According to a popular comedian and activist, Mr Macaroni, the protest becomes necessary and the aim is to bring attention to the economic hardships experienced by citizens and spark meaningful discussions about potential solutions.

Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged the organizers of the planned ‘EndBadGovernance’ protest, to cancel their plans and allow the government to address their grievances.

According to Information Minister Mohammed Idris, who spoke to select State House correspondents after a meeting with the President on Tuesday, President Tinubu appealed to the protesters to give the government an opportunity to respond to their concerns before taking to the streets. He said government is already working on plans to address some of these issues, including paying allowances to unemployed graduates in the country.

“The issue of the planned protest, Mr President does not see any need for that. He’s asked them to shelve that plan. He’s asked them to await the government’s response to all their pleas,” the minister said.

Indications suggest that the federal government has convened an emergency meeting to discuss the planned nationwide protest. This development follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s appeal to Nigerians to suspend the protest, requesting additional time to implement further initiatives. According to multiple sources, the meeting is scheduled to take place today, Wednesday at 10am in the conference room of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation’s office.
