Doctors absent as Borno Governor pays unannounced midnight visit to hospitals

By Umar Salam.

The Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umaru Zulum, was left puzzled when he paid an unscheduled midnight visit to the State Specialist and Umaru Shehu Hospitals in Maiduguri on Tuesday.

Prof. Zulum, who stormed the medical centres between 1 and 2am, didn’t find any of the medical doctors meant to be on duty at Umaru Shehu hospital.

It was also gathered that the doctors who live within the hospital’s staff quarters ignored their telephone calls.

According to the governor’s media aide, Isa Gusau, Governor Zulum went round the wards and met only 10 nurses on ground, out of the 135 working at the hospital, while none of the 19 resident doctors were found on duty.

The governor directed immediate sanctions for the absentees, adding that late-coming workers, teachers and other staff of public establishments would be dealt with.
