President Muhammadu Buhari has sent his condolences to the people of Rivers State following a tragic gas explosion which killed dozens of workers yesterday at Kom Kom in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State.
In a statement released by President Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the president condoled with the families of the victims, stressing that he was really disturbed by the tragic incident.
President Buhari further made demands for a thorough investigation to determine what was responsible for the gas pipeline explosion which recorded several fatalities.
According to the spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni, the explosion occurred when officials of Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC were carrying out routine maintenance of the facility in Kom Kom, adding that the casualty figure was yet to be ascertained.
“Shell was carrying out maintenance on the pipeline when the explosion happened. Our findings indicate that some members of the community rushed to the scene to scoop the product when the explosion happened.
“I can’t tell you how many people were burnt but it was not a good site. Our men are still at the scene,” he said.
